Family River Cruising

River_FlexibleTravelOne of the hottest trends in travel for the past decade, river cruising, built its popularity primarily on vacationing retirees and empty nesters. NOT ANY MORE!!!  What once was only a favorite travel choice for baby boomers is now appealing to families with young children or multi-generational groups.

There are a variety or great reasons why river cruising is appealing to families – here are three of them:

  1. Great Family time – The ships that sail European rivers are smaller than ocean cruises which can translate into more togetherness. On ocean ships, families are often separated with everyone doing different activities – many times in very different places.
  2. Culture and Education – Especially for older children and teens, the history and art lessons available on a European adventure are limitless. Imagine a scavenger hunt in the Louvre or a special dinner in a German castle or a bike ride through the Versaille gardens. The creative itineraries on a family river cruise are crafted to inspire and excite the youngest minds. It could mean a cooking class to make a local delicacy or special language class – these cruises are all about enrichment.
  3. More inclusions – Most river cruises build in extras, like tours and excursions at daily port stops so that you will have less extraneous charges at the end of the trip. In addition, some offer beer and wine which means your vacation cost is more inclusive than a typical ocean cruise.

Are there any drawbacks?  Maybe –  it depends on what you are looking for in a family vacation. River cruise ships don’t have kids clubs, water slides in the pool, arcades and specialty restaurants to help keep kids busy away from home. In addition, these ships are not configured for more than double occupancy which means a family of four would need two cabins.

In our opinion – the pros outweigh the cons and a family river cruise is the perfect way to make unforgettable memories with your children.
