The choices can be dizzying! Going on a hard-earned vacation seems like a fabulous idea – but the idea of planning it is overwhelming. Where do you start? How do you choose a destination? How much will it cost to do it right? What time of year should you go? There seem to be endless questions and even more decisions to make. Here are some tips to make it easier!
The first thing to determine is how much time you have because that’s going to help choose your destination. You would be surprised how many times people say they would like to visit a few European cities in a long weekend. Not going to happen in any manageable way. Be realistic. If you have a long weekend, consider visiting a fabulous US city such as New York, Chicago or Nashville. Or maybe spend 2 or 3 nights in the Bahamas or Punta Cana relaxing on a beach at an all-inclusive resort. Don’t try cramming too much traveling into a short time and end up feeling rushed and stressed.
The second determining factor is who your travel companions will be and what your budget looks like. It sounds obvious, we know, but sometimes these factors are not carefully considered. If you are traveling alone, do you want the kind of vacation where you have an escorted experience? If you are with children – what will best keep them happy and occupied? What kind of hotels do you like? Do you prefer an upscale experience or less-fancy accommodations. If you are going somewhere that requires new or different clothing or gear – have you factored those costs in to the trip price? Knowing these answers will help speed the process along.
Finally – what kind of experience are you looking for? It’s important to think about what you want to get out of your next journey. Is it pure relaxation and down time – or is it an authentic experience in an exotic locale? Do you like historical sites, culinary experiences, outdoor adventure – what kind of memories do you want to take away?
